First issue of the United States Catholic Miscellany, 1822

John England created the first Roman Catholic newspaper in the country, the United States Catholic Miscellany, in 1822. It ran until the Charleston fire of 1861 destroyed the publication’s offices.

It was not until the 1950s that the Office of the Catholic Miscellany produced a multi-folio statewide Catholic newspaper, the Catholic Banner.  By 1990, the newspaper was renamed the New Catholic Miscellany by Bishop David Thompson, and the offices were relocated back to Charleston from Columbia.  The “new” was removed during the late 1990s. The Catholic Miscellany, the official newspaper of the Diocese of Charleston, covers news relating to South Carolina’s Catholic community and the universal church.
