Bishop Paul J. Hallinan (1958-1962)

 

 

Paul J. Hallinan was born in 1911 in Painesville, Ohio, to Rose Jane Laracy and Clarence Hallinan.  In1932, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Notre Dame. He then attended Saint Mary Seminary in Wickliffe, Ohio. Hallinan was ordained in 1937 at the Diocese of Cleveland. From 1937-1942, he served as pastor at St. Aloysius Parish in Cleveland.

From 1942-1945, Hallinan served as an army chaplain in the South Pacific during World War II, with the rank of Captain. In 1958, he was appointed eighth bishop of Charleston. Under his episcopacy, Hallinan worked to integrate Catholic schools in South Carolina. In 1962, he was appointed Archbishop of Atlanta. Archbishop Hallinan died in 1968.
