First Integrated School in South Carolina
St. Anne School, a private Catholic School in Rock Hill, South Carolina, was founded by St. Anne Parish and the Oratorians (C.O.) in 1951. Classes were held in a renovated church rectory with 24 students in kindergarten and first grade. It was the first desegregated school in South Carolina, following the Brown vs. the Board of Education ruling in 1954. St. Anne School along with the kindergarten of St. Mary Parish, also in Rock Hill, remained the only integrated schools in the state until 1963.
